Medical alarms are a great step toward gaining peace of mind,
maintaining your independence and enjoying the continued comfort
of living in your own home. A typical home can be made even safer,
especially for infants, seniors, or those with mobility issues by
following these simple steps:
Be sure all walkways,
inside and outside your home, are clearly lit. Keep them free of
clutter.
Install and use
handrails on all stairways. Check them periodically to be sure
they are secure.
Install nightlights in
your home, especially in bedrooms, hallways and bathrooms.
Use non-skid rugs on
the bathroom floor and shower. Install handrails if necessary.
Keep the door unlocked so that it can be opened in an emergency.
Check your furniture
for strength and stability.
Area rugs should lie
flat on the floor. Double backed tape is a great way to keep them
in place. Non-skid area rugs are best.
Low-heel or flat sole
shoes are preferred whenever possible.
Keep all prescriptions
in one place. This will help caregivers and emergency responders
quickly identify any medication(s) your are taking.
Store frequently used
kitchen items in low and/or highly accessible locations.
If using a stepstool,
check it first. Be sure it is strong and stable.
Bright colors in a
home help when it comes to identifying landmarks e.g., walls,
stairs, etc.
Staying active helps
maintain mobility and stability and is useful in preventing falls.
Stay sociable with
neighbors. You can look out for each other.
